How to teach your dog to read

"Teach your dog to read" - to teach a dog to read? - Yes indeed! The American dog trainer Bonnie Bergin has written a book about this.

Can one actually teach his dog to read? - The American dog trainer Bonnie Bergin claims: Yes, you can!

And it makes sense because the "reading" is a good intelligence for young, but especially for older dogs.

Learning to Teach Dogs: "Teach your dog to read" (Bonnie Bergin)

Dogs should learn to read - nonsense or intelligence?

It can be quite useful if a dog understands verbal commands as well as visual signs, says dog trainer Bergin.

For example, in the event that the master or the mistress is missing the voice for some reason. Or you think of older dogs, which can not hear any better: Even then it is practical if one can communicate by visual signs if necessary.

In addition, the "read-learning" is a good intelligence for many dogs, Bergin says, which is quite fun. Reading is also suitable, for example, for elderly or sick dogs, who are no longer so mobile but still want to be mentally challenged.

Dog owners report that their dogs can distinguish up to 20 different words.

Dog Learning: How Does It Work?

Here's how: Work is done with simple cards. These are the basic concepts that the dog already knows as verbal commands and is now also supposed to learn to read.

The dog is shown the map first. It has waited briefly, then the verbal command given. If the dog carries it out, he is praised (important!) And gets a reward.

Important:

The dog should see the written word on the card before the verbal command is given. Also, it is advisable to avoid eye contact with the dog to avoid distracting it from the word on the card.

If the dog successfully performed the exercise several times, the word is shown on the map, but the verbal command is omitted. If after a few repetitions, the dog also exercises this exercise, a second card can be accepted.

Important! - The basic rules for "reading training" at a glance:

  • The dog must always have fun at the workout
  • The dog must never be abused, admonished or even punished
  • You always start with a single card and slowly increase

The cards should be changed on the other hand after a long period of exercise so that the dog does not associate the command with a particular page/hand, but actually with the word on the card

Be patient!

Continuous repetition is the key to success

By the way, dogs do not only like to read, they also like it when someone reads them:

If American dogs do not want to learn reading themselves, then there is another possibility: reading aloud!

Yes, and even a few books were written with "Goodnight Stories", especially for dogs! (And also for cats!)

The beauty of these stories is that they are short and simple, they have a "happy ending", are mostly foddering, and often things are smelly and smelly.

And tested by dogs and found for good, these very special stories are of course also!
