Findings that are often very fast and practical in daily life with dogs. The studies presented may seem a little strange, but they are all the more interesting.
For all dog friends who want to know a bit more about how their beloved four-legged dog is ticking - here are some of Stanley Coren's latest research results in the German language:
"Because of you, I still get gray hair!"
How quickly we humans become gray, determine our genes. But also fatalities and persistent stress can leave us prematurely grayed.
Dogs are similar: researchers have found that Stresshormone in particularly anxious and impulsive dogs ensure that these dogs face gray hair early.
Especially affected are dogs, who are afraid of loud noises, unknown humans, and animals.
Does age also have Serenity?
Dog owners of senior dogs probably know this: older dogs often look particularly confident, cleared and cool.
But under the calm surface, it can boil quite a bit: A study has determined by the measurement of stress hormones in young and older dogs that older dogs in a stressful situation react very emotionally.
They have, however, often learned to control their reactions and hardly notice the internal stress.
Has actually already invented contact lenses for dogs?
As we grow older, our vision diminishes: Suddenly we can no longer recognize things as they are at a distance - we become short-sighted.
Many dogs are similar. Dog owners who work a lot with hand signals are therefore recommended to make their gestures a bit clearer or, alternatively, to set their voices.
"Oh, he wags his tail, he is glad."
The fact that tail watching the dog does not always have to mean only joy, knows now surely everyone who is familiar with dogs.
It is fascinating, however, that we can actually read out the tail movement, whether the dog feels positive or negative emotions. Quite simply: if he bends to the right, he is positive. If he tends to the left, he is negative. In dogs of the same species, dogs can interpret these signals in the same way.
Important: Always look at the dog's sight!
How this phenomenon can be explained: As in man, the right-hand movement is controlled by the left hemisphere and reversed. The left hemisphere is responsible for the positive emotions, the right half of the brain provides for negative sensations.
Dogs are obviously happy and friendly ...
At least as far as human-to-human interaction is concerned. If anyone mom or dad treated unkindly, many dogs dissociate from that person.
But people who are the owner of the dog supportive to the side, are not preferred by the dog against neutrals.
The researchers conclude: Help is for dogs a normal and self-evident behavior.
Increase the success of dog training by 40 percent?
No problem is very simple: The training takes a rest rather by a short game unit complete.
Researchers have found that learning content learned in the training was much faster and better retrieved in the dog.
What does my dog actually do ...?
It is likely that every dog owner has once asked himself this question: Why do dogs often circle around a few times before resting on their blanket or in their dog basket?
Researchers have found that dogs show this behavior above all when they want to lay on a soft but uneven foundation.
A possible explanation may be: the dogs try to make their resting place a bit more comfortable by doing this.
A surprise at the end ...
And finally, a little experiment, which Stanley Coren carried out entirely without scientific support, but in self-government. Sometimes - as he writes - it is enough to just look and count.
The dog psychologist wanted to find out how passers-by responded to a dog sitting at the window. Corens Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Ripley was generously available as a test rabbit for this experiment.
Admittedly, the result will not be a big surprise for most dog owners: 75 per cent of the people who passed the window had to smile spontaneously at the sight of the four-legged dog.
