This year the thing everyone expected was Super Mario Odyssey! Personally, I was so eager to get my hands on it, I went straight to the terminals of the game! Here are my impressions:
I have always liked Mario 3D and in recent years the Mario 3D was very good but limited to small areas with different gameplay. (Mario Galaxy but also Super Mario 3D Worlds) Super Mario Odyssey seems to be the return of worlds to explore ( sandbox style) for the delight of the players.
Like everyone else, I found it very strange the level of the city, an artistic direction so different from usual Mario and humans with normal proportions, which makes Mario a monster. One side of Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast (The worst part of the game), in short not a thing that gives envy.
After 5 minutes, my fears are gone, you are really in a Mario, the city abounds with things to do (you can even drive a scooter) and there are plenty of hidden areas that are the opportunity to make Pure platform sequences. We find here the inventiveness but also the more classic sequences of a 3D Mario. In this episode, the most important addition is the Mario cap which allows you to turn into a lot of things (but not in humans).
One example among others: Thanks to its Mario cap materializes in pole and can propel itself through it in the air (and therefore climb the buildings) but also access areas inaccessible without it. The cap is more useful in the level of the sand, nice transition to this level that has bluffed me! (And that I finished at the end of my 5th test #PersonalBranling because the demo stops at 10 min, so do not hesitate)
Already graphically it is very pretty, fine textures, lots of colors with a harmony and a shimmering artistic direction worthy of the best worlds of Mario. The sand has a sandy look with a nice color, I particularly enjoyed the ice blocks that look like gems with transparency. Thanks to the cap, we can transform into almost everything (unfortunately not goomba), the example I preferred is when Mario turns into shells (by throwing his cap on the shell).
Far from being a gimmick funny for 2 seconds, this allows access to areas inaccessible until then. By turning into a statue with glasses, this changes the gameplay because with the glasses the statue spotlights the invisible paths but is also slower.
Some passages in 2D are cool, this side retro necessarily especially that it is not a level apart but a mechanical integrated into the world in 3D, to climb a tower for example. I could go on for hours but you better discover it yourself. I tested on the TV and it makes very good and I also tried in nomadic mode (screen with a joystick in front, see image below) and the game is nickel on it.
I can not wait to play Mario anywhere! Maneuverability level is very intuitive, at the moment launching his cap to jump on is little used and requires a little mastery. New: by making a long jump then shaking the joystick Mario makes roulades and advances faster. This trick will be very useful for speedruns.
