With an
excellent movie trailer, Slack Bay (French: Ma Loute) is a French comedy film directed by
Bruno Dumont. The film is placed in a coastal town in north France in 1910. A
well to do elaborate family visits their summer home (the Tymphonium) for their
yearly seaside holidays. They come across a police inquiry led by Inspector
Machin seeing into different disappearances of tourists in the place.
The
protective and extremely strange Van Peteghem family—among them Juliette
Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi—have permanent in for
another summer at their cliff-top villa overlooking the descriptive Slack Bay.
Their unhurried rhythm of sunbathing and seaside constitutionals is hurry
interrupted by the visit of two bumbling inspectors inquiring a string of
tourists gone missing (and serving full-on Keystone Kops). As the macabre
secrets mount and love blossoms among the family’s genderqueer teen and the son
of a local fisherman, Binoche and company ratchet the slapstick up to 11. It’s
no wonder director Bruno Dumont (Li’l Quinquin, Camille Claudel 1915) cites Peter
Sellers, Monty Python, and Laurel and Hardy as cinematic impacts for his
pleasing foray into winking, absurdist comedy.
